Ed Bain has a
statistical approach
to betting on racing and has
compiled his own statistics on the trainer since 1993. Ed went to the track for over 30 years before he focused on statistics and he knew through his betting records that he lost about 10%. Yet he always believed with the right information that he could bet for a living.
It was after compiling his Layoff and Claim statistics that he developed his approach. He focused on trainers that produced a 30% hit rate with 4 wins or more (4 + 30) yet with this 30% win rate he also had to address this trainers 70% loss rate. He knew that if he was going to make money over the long term and be able to make a living at the track that he had to focus on a set number of races each day. So after applying his list of filters, Ed averages 4 to 5 bets a day.
Though Ed is quick to say "This is an average. As an example on Saturday or Sunday when a lot of the tracks are open I may have 7 to 8 bets while on Monday and Tuesday when there are just a few tracks running, I may have 2."
"I could never do this." With jobs and families, most just do not have the time. Yet these players want to win when they go to the track, even if it's just on weekends or a few days a month.
Then there are the players that would use Ed stats however they too only go on weekends or a few days a month.
Players just like these have asked Ed repeatedly if he would sell his daily plays and Ed has been reluctant because he averages 4 or 5. He would never give a play out in every race and he would only be able to offer his selections daily if players understood and accepted this.
Most of these players say they would. That they do not care if he has just 4 or 5 or even 2. They know that Ed's stats are high percentage plays that are in the money 50% of the time and that these plays would give them that same high percentage chance that Ed has to make money too.
Susan
Sweeney also has a statistical approach
to betting and uses this
information to bet exotics. Like Ed, Susan has a routine. Susan averages 18 SIGNERS a year though she state's "The SIGNERS happen because I focus on exotic bets yet there is money to made in exotic betting even if you are not going for the signer in every race. I try to let the race tell me what to bet.
As an example the bulk of the bets I make are from the races I scan for horses that like to finish in the money at the track and at the distance at least 60% of the time with a morning line of at least 7/2. After I have culled through these potential bets, I then try to determine if I think the favorite is vulnerable. If I do, then I look further, if I do not, then I go to another race."
Susan also has extensive turf pedigree knowledge and knows when to use this to her advantage. She has been a full time player since 1999 though she has bet on racing for 12 years. She also averages 4 bets a day and feels comfortable with giving 2 of her bets out each day.
